Photography For Beginners, What Is ISO, Aperature, And Shutter Speed

photography for beginnersIn this brief tutorial of photography for beginners, lets take a look at what ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperature settings are. If you are like most of us were when going from the automatic camera settings to manual settings, you are most likly befuddled a bit. Have no fear for we are going to clear these terms up for you.

So what are some of the reasons in photography for beginners for going to the manual mode on your camera?

  • Will allow you to have more control over your images
  • Control of field of depth
  • Blurring of motion
  • Lightness or darkness of your photo
  • Crispness of detail just to name a few of the advantages

Photography For Beginners ISO

ISO or (International Organization For Standardization) refers to your cameras sensitivity to light. The higher your ISO setting the more sesitive to light your camera will be. Contrasts to the speed of the film from the old days.

  • You will find that you can make your image wash out if you make the camera to sensitive to light in a bright light atmosphere.
  • Make image way to dark if set to low in low light atmosphere
  • The higher the ISO setting the more noise/grain will be present in you images

Photography For Beginners Aperature Setting

Aperature is controlled by the lense. The larger the aperature the more light that will enter your camera. The smaller the aperature the less light that will enter your camera. Act similar to the pupil in your eye which gets larger the darker it is for more light and smaller the brighter it is for less light.

Aperature controls depth of field

  • the larger the aperature setting the shallower the depth of field will be
  • the smaller the aperature setting the deeper the depth of field will be

We can take advantage of this, as we can use it to get our main subject of the image in good focus in contrast to the background of our image. The higher the number of the setting the smaller the aperature will be.

 Photography For Beginners Shutter Speed

Shutter speed controls the duration of the light hitting your cameras sensor.

  • the longer the time the shutter is open the more light that is going to come into the cameras sensors and the brighter the picture will be
  • the faster the shutter speed the less light will hit sensor making the picture less bright
  • the faster the shutter speed the better able to capture a moving subject
  • the slower the shutter speed can blur moving subjects

As stated earlier in this photography for beginners article, if we use the manual setting on our camera, you will get to have control over your images. This can be achieved by taking control of the camera away from the built in computer and giving yourself the ability to use your artistic talents to achieve neat results.

The cameras computer will give you basic photos without much life. Photography for beginners is a road giving us fun things to learn and use.
